The Murray Grey breed is an old heritage breed, over 100 years, bred in the Murray River Valley of Australia. A single roan Shorthorn cow was crossed with various Angus bulls, and the resulting offspring formed the foundation of the Murray Grey breed, when the offspring came out unusually colored grey. Known throughout Australia and beyond for their genetic prevalence for tenderness and marbling genes, their hardiness, and calving ease, these cows are ideal for the small farms in Idaho. The steers we raise, come from proven stock that consistently grade very well, Choice on grass and Prime plus when grain finished.
Treasure Valley Idaho is known for it's agriculture, but it is also known for a wide temperature swing. Winters below freezing, and Summers up to 110 degrees, Murray Greys have the hardiness to do well. In the summer, when neighboring herds are standing in the ponds, our Murray Greys are still out grazing, converting grass into beef. The darker pigmentation of the Murray Grey, as seen on their udder and muzzle, reduces the incidence of sunburned teats and udders, and pinkeye.
Murray Greys range in color from silver to shades of grey to black. The cows are known for their mothering ability and longevity, with many producing a quality calf into their teens. Because we are a small farm, we utilize the best semen in the world we can find to produce top notch babies. Murray Greys respond well to AI , where as other beef breeds are a little more difficult to inseminate successfully.
For the commercial producer, Murray Grey sires provide a safe, calving-ease option for heifers, without sacrificing growth or phenotype. With the majority of calves being 65-75 lbs at birth, and viable calves that are quick to their feet and nursing within 30 minutes of birth- combined with a gentle nature, our bulls calves are an excellent addition for your small farm herd.
